Swinging for the fences

Success in Sales starts with you. Never be afraid to dream big and just go for it. If you don’t believe in yourself no one is going to do it for you. It begins with a can do attitude, afraid of nothing and totally without limits.

I must tip my hat to Conor McGregor for his salesmanship in pulling off the fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather which is one for the history books. McGregor was amazing in his ability to sell Mayweather on the prospect of the fight along with enticing the millions of people who tuned into this interesting match up (6.5M PPV buys!). Despite McGregor being an overwhelming underdog, his fearlessness and tenacity to win sparked debate from all sides. Given the diverse nature of his MMA background, the task of going up against 49-0 Mayweather Jr. the boxing prodigy, was by all accounts an insurmountable feat. It is virtually impossible for a generalist to beat out a top specialist in their own sport.

Nonetheless, the showmanship and “Star Quality” from McGregor was too tempting for me to see how this Irishman would fare. The notion of a punchers chance drew underdog lovers from all over the world.

One might argue that Conor definitely bit off more than he could chew, which turned out to be the case. However, all of us I feel left with a new found respect for McGregor in that he backed up his talk with every intention to take it to the champ. I applaud Mayweather as well for stepping to the center of the ring and making it a fight worth watching. Both are tough guys, but it takes a lot more than that to pull off a superfight of this magnitude.

“Star Quality” is earned when you are unique and different from the rest of the pack. I kind of equate it to a celebrity-like appeal. Sales people that have it are very special and when accompanied with a sharp foundation of core skills it makes them unbeatable in the Sales ring. Whenever I look to bring someone onto my team this notion of Star Quality is something that I seek out aggressively.

Sales is about moving the needle and making an impact. If you don’t swing for the fences you are just pulling punches and will miss your shot at the big Knockout!
