Who do you choose to be? A lesson in greatness: Cyborg

In order to reach the pinnacle of any sport you have to learn from those who charted paths before you. Human nature drives us to constantly push the envelope towards perfection and break through barriers to achieve new heights. Our journeys accelerate when we are surrounded by top talent, steel sharpens steel. I make it a point to try and learn from the best regardless of industry in the hopes of capturing some nuggets to apply in my own work and personal life.

In Martial Arts and fight sports, it quite common to get handed down nicknames from your coaches that will stick with you forever and in essence define who you are what you are about. Recently, I came across a great video from an individual who I had the opportunity to attend one of his seminars several years ago. His name is Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu.

Cyborg “a fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements built into the body.”

Cyborg is an ADCC Absolute Champion, 4x No-Gi World Champion, Pan American Champion and Brazilian National Champion. To net it out, one of the very best in the business.. top of the BJJ food chain.

His story is amazing, he came to the United States with $800 in his pockets and no where to live. Today, he is one of the most highly recognized and regarded athletes in the sport, and more importantly one of the most inspirational people you’ll ever meet.

In the office, I often tell my team to not overcomplicate things. Especially in a highly technical sales environment there is a tendency to over-engineer things.

Cyborg’s formula for success is simple and pure: Love what you do

For Cyborg training is his passion, it is like breathing and eating, you do it everyday as part of your natural life. Despite downturns you will find a way to keep yourself motivated if you are truly engaged in your passion. Being a champion is not a one time event, it is a way of life… it is how you act and behave every single day – on or off the mat! I encourage new people and those who have been in the business forever to be passionate about what we do, never neglect the basics and train like a champion everyday!

Cyborg chooses to be Champion, what is your choice? I also choose:  Champion!!!
